Fat Joy was founded on a simple, radical belief that fat people deserve spaces where:

  • our stories are centered,

  • our creativity is celebrated,

  • and our wholeness is non-negotiable.

Everything we create- from the popular Fat Joy podcast, to our cozy Silent Book Club gatherings, to the generative, dream-big energy of the Creation Lab- is rooted in fat liberation, community care, and the joy that comes from being witnessed without apology.

Fat Joy is a home for curiosity, connection, and creation.

Sophia Apostol, a professional certified coach, founded Fat Joy as a love letter to anyone who has ever been told they are both too much and not enough.

Body Liberation Coaching

Your body was never the problem. Diet culture is.

Fat Joy coaching starts from a single, freeing premise: you weren't weak or undisciplined, you were targeted by a multi-billion dollar industry built to profit from your body shame.

Using the Enneagram as a map, Sophia helps you find the specific place that messaging found its way in and the particular fear or longing it learned to use against you, all so that you can finally see the pattern clearly and choose differently.

This is liberation work.

Sophia is a professional certified coach (PCC), fat herself, and spent years sitting with people inside the wreckage diet culture leaves behind.

Together we'll do the real, sustaining work of getting free.

Fat Joy Experiences

In-person gatherings where fat folks share adventures in the easy delight of great company.

Fat Joy Experiences are where the community comes together to actually enjoy ourselves. Doing all the kinds of things that are better in good company.

There's a particular magic in a room full of fat folks at ease, laughing, trying something new together.

With people who already understand your lived experience, you get to relax and just enjoy yourself.

The joys to experience are endless…..

Silent Book C;lub

Because any gathering of fat people is a rebellion.

A monthly gathering on Zoom to read, craft, puzzle, or play alongside other fat folks.

Silent Book Club: Fat Joy Edition is a free, virtual gathering where fat folks come together each month to do the leisure activities that bring us play, rest, and joy. Grab a book, your knitting, a colouring book, your guitar, whatever feels delicious to you, and enjoy it in the cozy, silent-but-together company of people who get it.

Most of us have never been in a space that's all fat people. There's a real comfort in looking around the room and knowing the group can relate to your lived experience. No pressure to perform. Just creative nourishment and the quiet rebellion of claiming your birthright to rest.

Fat Joy Podcast

A joyful rebellion against anti-fatness.

Each episode of the Fat Joy Podcast is a conversation between host Sophia Apostol and another fat person about how to flourish in our fatphobic world.

We’re exploring the harms, biases, and oppressions we’ve experienced while living in a world that marginalizes plus-size & fat bodies and promotes the lies of Diet Culture.

But most importantly, we’re sharing how we still dare to have the audacity and courage to reach towards joy and live our best lives while advocating for collective fat liberation & body positivity.

About Sophia

For over a decade, I’ve been making joyful, rebellious spaces for fat folks – the Fat Joy Podcast (a top 2% global podcast), body liberation coaching, writing workshops, and Creation Lab, where people turn their frustration with diet culture into creative acts of liberation.

I came to this work through my own life: after decades of extreme dieting and an eating disorder – I know in my body what it means to need a soft place to land.

My gift is holding spaces where people can exhale, show up fully, and trust they belong. I wholeheartedly believe in the inherent worthiness of fat people and the birthright of fat joy.
