Meet Sophia: Body Liberation Coach & Fat Joy Founder
For over a decade, I've been making joyful, rebellious spaces for fat folks:
naked workshops
Fat Joy writing workshops
self-care cards
the Fat Joy Podcast
body liberation coaching
and Creation Lab, where I achemize people turn their frustration with diet culture and anti-fatness into creative acts of liberation that shape our collective fat futures.
One of my gifts is taking big, dreamy ideas and wrapping my arms around them, turning them into something tangible, impactful, and delightful.
The other is co-creating spaces that blend warmth and courage- places where people can exhale, show up fully, and trust that they belong.
I came to this work through my own life.
After decades of extreme dieting, an eating disorder, and a long war with my body, it was a profound relief to understand how I'd been manipulated by diet culture.
I've also lived through plenty of other hard things- divorce, miscarriage, illness, step-parenting, bankruptcy, family estrangement- so I know in my body how essential a soft place to land is when you're climbing up from rock bottom. That's the place I coach from.
I believe in the inherent worthiness of fat people and the birthright of fat joy.

As a Body Liberation Coach, my approach is about understanding the obstacles we're really up against, deepening your self-knowledge and your skills, and making meaningful changes toward the life you want.
And that has to happen in the context of diet culture, capitalism, racism, and ableism, because if we leave systemic oppression out of the conversation, we're not talking about the reality of our lives, and we end up believing we're to blame instead of the lies we were sold.

I'm also a leadership development coach for folks trying to make corporate life more human and a creative writing coach for folks trying to bring their hearts to the page.
My coaching style is warm, enthusiastic, and direct. Clients have described being coached by me as being wrapped in a warm blanket, the kind that gives you the confidence to believe everything's possible and the grit to go after it.

Creating and hosting the Fat Joy podcast (a top 2% global podcast!) allowed me to chat with people like Aubrey Gordon, adrienne maree brown, Mary Lambert, and many other incredible fat folks.
The podcast is a way of harnessing my rage against diet culture and alchemizing it into connection and joy within community.
This podcast is a love letter to anyone who has ever been told they are too much and not enough, all at the same time.
Outside of my work life, you'll find me cozied up in coffee shops working on my memoir verrry sloooowly.
I craft badly with friends (currently terrible at rug hooking) and find solace in my monochrome colouring book, because I love not having to make a single decision.
I spend the rest of my time with my husband, two teenaged step-kiddos, and our pup Beatrice. The pic is from our backyard covid wedding.
I'm a settler on the lands of the Wendake-Nionwentsïo, Haudenosaunee, Attiwonderonk, Mississauga, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabewaki, in what is now called Ontario, Canada.
