Meet Sophia: Body Liberation Coach & Fat Joy Founder

A woman with short, curly dark hair smiling and wearing a black top with a red jacket. She has a large ring on her finger, large hoop earrings, and a nose piercing. She is standing in front of a bookshelf with white books.
Two photos with a collage style. The left photo shows women at a conference or event, standing in front of a microphone and computer screen, listening. The right photo shows a woman outdoors at a busy event, wearing a pink knit hat with a unicorn horn, smiling, and with the US Capitol building in the background.

For over a decade, I've been making joyful, rebellious spaces for fat folks:

  • naked workshops

  • Fat Joy writing workshops

  • self-care cards

  • the Fat Joy Podcast

  • body liberation coaching

  • and Creation Lab, where I achemize people turn their frustration with diet culture and anti-fatness into creative acts of liberation that shape our collective fat futures.

One of my gifts is taking big, dreamy ideas and wrapping my arms around them, turning them into something tangible, impactful, and delightful.

The other is co-creating spaces that blend warmth and courage- places where people can exhale, show up fully, and trust that they belong.

Woman smiling and holding an embroidered hoop with the words "fuck diet culture" and small red hearts.
Three photos of a woman with short curly brown hair. In the first, she is on stage holding a microphone, wearing a patterned dress, standing in front of blue curtains. In the second, she is holding a paper heart, smiling, in front of a decorated backdrop with a sign that says 'with love'. In the third, a promotional flyer for the Expo, showcasing her as a new speaker at an event on March 7-8, 2020 at the Toronto Congress Centre, with her name, Sophia Apostol, and a portrait of her smiling, wearing a black shirt.

I came to this work through my own life.

After decades of extreme dieting, an eating disorder, and a long war with my body, it was a profound relief to understand how I'd been manipulated by diet culture.

I've also lived through plenty of other hard things- divorce, miscarriage, illness, step-parenting, bankruptcy, family estrangement- so I know in my body how essential a soft place to land is when you're climbing up from rock bottom. That's the place I coach from.

I believe in the inherent worthiness of fat people and the birthright of fat joy.

  • A vibrant gathering of diverse individuals filled with energy, sharing laughter and ideas in a sunlit room, celebrating body positivity and fat liberation amidst a cozy, inviting atmosphere.

As a Body Liberation Coach, my approach is about understanding the obstacles we're really up against, deepening your self-knowledge and your skills, and making meaningful changes toward the life you want.

And that has to happen in the context of diet culture, capitalism, racism, and ableism, because if we leave systemic oppression out of the conversation, we're not talking about the reality of our lives, and we end up believing we're to blame instead of the lies we were sold.

  • Sophia Apostol, the founder of Fat Joy Creation Lab and a white woman with a bold red shawl turns the pages of a book, against a vibrant backdrop of colorful shelves. A celebration of body positivity and creativity shines through.

I'm also a leadership development coach for folks trying to make corporate life more human and a creative writing coach for folks trying to bring their hearts to the page.

My coaching style is warm, enthusiastic, and direct. Clients have described being coached by me as being wrapped in a warm blanket, the kind that gives you the confidence to believe everything's possible and the grit to go after it.

  • A white plus-size woman with light brown hair and wearing a vibrant teal dress, joyfully stretches dough in a bright kitchen. The scene embodies creativity, community, and fat liberation, celebrating body positivity and joyful expression.

Creating and hosting the Fat Joy podcast (a top 2% global podcast!) allowed me to chat with people like Aubrey Gordon, adrienne maree brown, Mary Lambert, and many other incredible fat folks.

The podcast is a way of harnessing my rage against diet culture and alchemizing it into connection and joy within community.

This podcast is a love letter to anyone who has ever been told they are too much and not enough, all at the same time.

Outside of my work life, you'll find me cozied up in coffee shops working on my memoir verrry sloooowly.

I craft badly with friends (currently terrible at rug hooking) and find solace in my monochrome colouring book, because I love not having to make a single decision.

I spend the rest of my time with my husband, two teenaged step-kiddos, and our pup Beatrice. The pic is from our backyard covid wedding.

I'm a settler on the lands of the Wendake-Nionwentsïo, Haudenosaunee, Attiwonderonk, Mississauga, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Anishinabewaki, in what is now called Ontario, Canada.

A close-up of Sophia Apostol's ear, showcasing a vibrant purple heart earring reading "Fuck Diet Culture," symbolizing fat liberation. Curly hair and a colorful top reflect boldness and body positivity.
